10 Things You Need To Know about Google’s Mobile-Friendly Update

According to Google, 61% of the users leave your website if it is not mobile friendly. Google has decided to give priority to ‘mobile friendly’ websites in ‘mobile search results’ comes as no surprise. Here are ten things you should know about Google’s new update:

  1. Tablet or desktop ranking will not be affected – it applies only to people searching from their cell phones.

  2. This is a page-level change not a site level change – which means only your mobile friendly pages will be shown in mobile searches.

  3. When your page is mobile friendly, “Googlebot” for smartphones will automatically crawl and index it. To make things quick you can use Fetch as Google with Submit to Index in Webmaster tools.

  4. If you think that your website is mobile friendly but is unable to pass the Mobile-Friendly Test – check if Googlebot for smartphones is blocked from crawling resources like JavaScript or CSS.

  5. If your mobile friendly pages link to pages that are not mobile friendly – no need to worry – Google will still consider you a mobile friendly website.

  6. Google doesn’t care if you use Responsive Web Design or dynamic serving or separate mobile URL’s.

  7. If your website is not mobile friendly, but has great content – it still has a chance to show up in Google search results.

  8. If all your traffic is coming from desktops, here is what statistics say: “people are going “mobile only” -- either because they never had a desktop or because they won’t replace their existing desktop.”

  9. If your pages are showing mobile usability errors, check how Youtube videos are embedded. Try converting “old style” <object> to <iframe> embeds for broader compatibility.

  10. Google suggests 7mm width/height for primary targets and a 5mm margin (between secondary taps).
